Patients Over 40s or 50s May Improve their Vision Through Clear Lens Extraction, or Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) is an emerging procedure for the treatment of refractive errors for people over 40 years. For some patients, clear lens extraction may become a better option than LASIK. However, for better results surgery should be done from the best eye hospital only.

Clear Lens Extraction

Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) or Refractive Lens Exchange surgery is meant for people who are not qualified or ideal candidate for LASIK laser eye surgery. It is a vision correction surgical procedure intended to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts for people over the age of 40. CLE may be a better option for someone considering LASIK over the age of 40 years old.
Though CLE is very similar to cataract surgery, it has multiple benefits that extend well beyond. Sharp Sight (Group of Eye Hospitals) are among the best eye hospitals in Delhi to conduct Clear Lens Extraction (CLE)- lens replacement surgery at affordable cost.

Refractive Corrections Offered With CLE

  • High Myopia - Nearsightedness or short sightedness
  • High Hyperopia - Long sightedness or farsightedness
  • High Astigmatism

Advantages of CLE and RLE
CLE-Lens Replacement Surgery involves replacing the eyes' natural lens with an artificial lens so that the vision is improved or the existing spectacle power is corrected.
RLE-Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery which is identical to Cataract Surgery is performed in the similar manner. But it is called clear lens extraction/refractive lens exchange, due to the reason that the eye's natural lens is not cloudy as yet from cataract when it is removed and replaced. In CLE a non-cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. This artificial lens carries the power to be corrected.

Although, primary advantage of CLE is to improve vision, it's secondary advantage is that once the patient has had the lens replacement surgery they will never require 'Cataract Surgery' because the natural lens of the eye has already been replaced.
Lens replacement surgery is also termed RLR (Refractive Lens Replacement) and RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange). If you are presbyopic (require glasses to do near work also), by exchanging your own natural lens for a multi-focal lens /accommodative lens (crystalens) implant, both eyes can regain their ability to focus at all distances. This surgery is also known as PRELEX (Presbyopic Lens Exchange).

Types of Lens Replacement (CLE)
As in Cataract Surgery, 3 types of IOLs are commonly used to replace your natural lens, depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes. These are:

Fixed Focus Implant / Monofocal Implant

This type of lens implant is most often indicated if you are over 40 years of age. However, reading glasses would still be required with this type of surgery. If you already suffer from cataract, then lens replacement may be a good option, as the natural lens may need to be replaced over time, anyways

Multi Focus Implant

This type of lens implant known as PRELEX (Presbyopic Lens Exchange), can improve near and distant vision, hence it is suitable if you are both hyperopic and presbyopic. PRELEX replaces the natural lens with a multi-focal IOL implant which eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses, completely.

Accommodative Lens Implant

This lens implant can artificially accommodate itself like the eye's natural lens instead of remaining rigid like other types of lens replacements. The lens works naturally with your eye muscles using hinges, which are designed to allow the lens to move and focus on objects at all distances.
